The Edmonton Shift Lab project launched in late 2016 and has explored a number of prototype ideas around the intersection of poverty, racism and housing. This Lab uses human-centred design to break through to new thinking and identify new approaches and solutions.
As of June 2018, funding for the second stage of exploration has been confirmed, and the Shift Lab will be undertaking a more detailed exploration and development of one of the prototypes. Possible partnership opportunities to develop a prototype are being explored.
The three prototypes developed are:
- Mobile Housing Resources – deliver legal triage through a multi-agency mobile unit that could provide legal advice or assistance, service navigation and connection at rotating housing units throughout the city.
- Landlord Diversity Certificate Program – training program for large scale building management companies and landlords who work with diverse tenants. Successful landlords would receive a ‘Diversity Approved’ certificate and branding materials.
- Journey to YIMBY – a guide to nonprofits who want to develop successful affordable housing for racialized people throughout the city of Edmonton.
