Year 2 Progress—Food enterprise supports

Posted: Sep 29, 2019

Road Map Action 32 is to advance the development and stability of local food businesses. Over the last year EndPovertyEdmonton has been convening entrepreneurs/organizations that run food enterprises that have a mission that contributes to ending poverty. The businesses that are part of this initiative may;

  • alleviate food insecurity by increasing access to healthy and affordable food

  • create training and employment or self employment opportunities for low income Edmontonians

  • Increase access to culturally appropriate foods

  • earning revenue to meet the mission of their organization.

In the first half of 2018, organizers met with the food enterprise group to discuss opportunities for the entrepreneurs to provide value to each other and identify potential connections and efficiencies that could exist working together.

Areas included:

  • sharing resources and facilities,

  • conducting market research for an Indigenous food based collective

  • food education

  • collective food purchasing

  • developing connections with entities such as the ECDC, Food4Good, City of Edmonton’s Food and Agri-Business Diversification Council Initiative and other food hubs
